Miami Valley News Project

This project sought to partner the journalism program at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, with public and commercial media, to create a regional news service for Southwest Ohio and East Central Indiana.  When collaboration proved diffiicult, the Miami Valley News Network became a news site developed and maintained by the journalism faculty and students at the university.

The Lexington Commons

Seungahn Nah, a University of Kentucky professor of Community Communications sought to build a digital neighborhood newspaper covering news and building a sense of community across lines of race, ethnicity and income. The university’s Department of Community and Leadership Development spearheaded the project. Collaboration was sought with the University’s Cooperative Extension Service, and the Department of Agricultural Communications, which will launch and maintain the project’s website.

Grass Roots: Digital Journalism in the Nation’s Birthplace of Aviation

Stories That Fly was developed Kent State journalism professor Joe Murray to mentor student reporters and general aviators in covering Ohio’s 166 public airports, 772 private airfields and 18,000 pilots. The site was inactive while Murray wrote a book, Lost in Oscar Hotel, on how he and a partner flew consecutively from Kent to the Wright Brothers Airport in  Dayton via all of Ohio’s 88 counties — a distance of 1,670 miles — in two 1946 Piper J3Cubs. Proceeds from the book fund an annual scholarship to help disadvantaged families send a child to college.

Green Jobs Philly

This website and newsletter focused on Philadelphia’s eco-economy. Targeted to local officials, businesses, organizations and job seekers, it  featured green job listings, green services and green grassroots initiatives.

Immigration: The View from Here

The last Census cites Gunnison County, CO as 96% White, but this rural and remote area has changed. KBUT Community Radio partnered with the Crested Butte News and Gunnison Country Times to explore the issues, impacts and history of immigration in the Gunnison Valley. Local immigrants as citizen journalists are recording personal diaries, interviews and blogs. Stories will broadcast on KBUT and kbut.org will have an audio archive and additional content including listener/user feedback. KBUT will share MP3 files of the broadcast pieces with Colorado’s 12 other community radio stations.

Voices for Veterans

VetVenue sought to be a technology-based information site for veterans. to include a blog, newsletter, website and webcasts. Veteran input helped to pinpoint subjects to be featured. The site is primary focused on employment readiness and available jobs. VetVenue is maintained by Fast Forward, a community technology center in Columbia, S.C., but has been mostly inactive since 2010.

Family Life Behind Bars

A CUNY Graduate School of Journalism professor and students launched this site to allow users to share information and tell stories about the financial, social and emotional impact of incarceration on families and personal relationships. The site posted content from “columnists” from the affected communities and from graduate students. All were invited to post photos, videos and audio. It included a radio webcast and quizzes. It went inactive in 2011.

The Appalachian Independent

A group of citizens working with a civic group created this online newspaper for the rural community around Frostburg, MD. It was modeled on the National League of Cities’ Inclusive Community Program. Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland students and faculty participated. It continues to be update by a corps of volunteers.

Cool State Online

California State University-Los Angeles journalism students and faculty launched this site to offer reports, commentary, and analyses on education, culture & arts, and environmental issues concerning communities in the San Gabriel Valley, which has a large Asian and Latino communities.
