Lincoln’s New Voices

Mosaic is a website created by the University of Nebraska’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications to give voice and provide resources for Lincoln’s fast-growing community of immigrants and ethnic minorities. Content comes from students and community members.

Tipster at VTDigger.org

Tipster was created to as a crowdsourcing platform to allow citizens to send story tips or documents to editors at VTDigger.org, a statewide news website that publishes watchdog reports on state government, politics, consumer affairs, business and public policy six days a week. Tipster was the brainchild of site founder Anne Galloway.

Essex County Community Media

Essex Voices covers news, events and culture in the greater Newark metropolitan area. Content for the site is produced by Essex County College Communications and New Media Technology students. It was founded by Jennifer Wager, an instructor at the college. Essex Voices was the first New Voices project based at a community college.

NeighborWeb

NeighborWebSJ is a local online news site that grew out of a need for residents of San Jose, Calif., to connect with one another and City Hall and promote civic engagement. NWSJ covers local and community news with a focus on the diversity of its residents and their efforts to make their neighborhoods cleaner, safer and engaged. NWSJ is edited and published by Janice Rombeck, a former San Jose Mercury News editor and reporter.

AllPrinceton

AllPrinceton.com was created by former CNN producer Donna Liu as a news hub for Princeton Borough and Township, focusing on public meetings, schools and development issues. The site was based at Princeton Community TV but became inactive after two years when it failed to find a way to be sustainable.

Morgan MoJo Lab

The Morgan MOJO Lab was created in 2010 at Morgan State University in Baltimore, which became the first historically black college in the country to teach students how to be mobile digital journalists. The site was created by journalism program coordinator Allissa Richardson. When she moved to Bowie State, student work was housed at a new site, mojomediaworks.com.

Landings

Landings is the newsletter of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA). In 2010, a New Voices grant helped the association create a separate new site, landings.org. Then in 2013, the Maine Lobstermen’s Community Alliance (MLCA), the sister, non-profit organization of the MLA, launched Landings as part of alliance’s site. The newsletter also covers association news.

River District News

A former Charlotte Observer journalist Richard Haeg, working with the Catawba River District, spearheaded development of a news and information website about a community-driven environmental makeover of the endangered district near Charlotte, N.C. Content was generated by volunteers, freelancers, and participation was invited fromthe local parks and recreation department, agricultural extension service and the energy company. The organization has since expanded to embrace the Green Teacher Network Charlotte.

Oregon Arts Watch

Oregon ArtsWatch is an arts and culture project founded by culture reporter Barry Johnson in Portland. He aimed to make the site a collaboration with Portland-area performing arts groups. Johnson has written and edited arts and culture stories since 1978. He started ArtsWatch after he left The Oregonian, where he worked for 26 years. He also contributes arts coverage to Oregon Public Broadcasting.
