  • New Voices: What Works (October 20, 2010) - Through 2010, New Voices grants have been awarded to 55 local news projects from a pool of 1,433 applicants. Simply put, we examined what worked and what didn't, what made for robust sites or led to disappointment. We offer tips to help other startups and recommendations for Knight and other foundations based on what J-Lab has learned in mentoring these startups.
  • Engage Users, Tout Content, Tease Out Contributors J-Lab Reports on Community News (September 30, 2010) - Community news sites should engage, not just inform, their users; ramp up quickly with social media tools; tease out contributors rather than train a corps of citizen journalists in advance; and invest a lot of sweat equity, according to a new J-Lab report culling lessons learned from five years of funding community news startups.

  • New Voices Invests in Nine Community News Projects (May 18, 2010) - Nine hyperlocal community media projects from across the United States have been selected as this year's New Voices grant winners. Each will receive up to $25,000 in start-up funding over the next two years.

Nine projects will each receive up to $25,000 in grants over two years.

The journalism is characterized by a deliberate shift in the definition of objectivity, a drive for community conversation and discussion and broader definitions of "news" that seek to connect readers to a sense of the place where they live.

  • Funding for Community News Sites (December 3, 2008) - Eight start-up, micro-local news projects will each receive up to $25,000 in grants during the course of two years.
  • New Voices Invests in a New Regional News Model, Community and Niche Web Sites (May 15, 2008) - Ten innovative citizen media projects have been selected as this year's New Voices grant winners and will each receive up to $17,000 in start-up funding.
  • Apply Now: Funding to Start Community News Projects (December 2, 2007) - The New Voices project will help fund the start-up of 10 innovative local news initiatives next year. Each project may receive as much as $17,000 in grants over two years. Thirty New Voices projects have been funded since 2005.
  • New Voices: 10 New Citizen Media Ideas Are Funded (April 4, 2007) - Ten new ideas for amplifying community news will receive $12,000 New Voices grants to launch news sites for under-covered communities, embed TV reporters in neighborhoods, network regional radio programs, and map the local impact of climate change, J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism announced today.
  • New Voices: New Funding for 10 Innovative Citizen Media Projects (April 18, 2006) - Environmental news in the Great Lakes, communities in rural Alaska and inner-city neighborhoods in Philadelphia will be covered in 10 innovative community news experiments to receive 2006 New Voices funding, J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism announced today.
  • J-Learning.org: J-Lab launches “how-to” site for community publishing (August 24, 2005) - J-Learning.org, a how-to digital handbook for designing, launching and sustaining an online community news site was launched today by J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism at the University of Maryland.

  • Call for Proposals: Citizens Media Ventures (January 10, 2005) - New Voices, a pioneering program to seed innovative citizen media ventures around the country, today issued a call for its first round of grant proposals.
  • $1 Million to Launch Community News Ventures (October 25, 2004) - J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism will launch a pioneering program to seed community news ventures around the country with a new $1 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
