Grass Roots: Digital Journalism in the Nation’s Birthplace of Aviation (Stories That Fly)

Stories That Fly

Stories That Fly was developed Kent State journalism professor Joe Murray to mentor student reporters and general aviators in covering Ohio’s 166 public airports, 772 private airfields and 18,000 pilots. The site was inactive while Murray wrote a book, Lost in Oscar Hotel, on how he and a partner flew consecutively from Kent to the Wright Brothers Airport in  Dayton via all of Ohio’s 88 counties — a distance of 1,670 miles — in two 1946 Piper J3Cubs. Proceeds from the book fund an annual scholarship to help disadvantaged families send a child to college.
